Funding awarded to improve homes in Adur will be used to demolish a former sheltered accommodation block so a new housing scheme can be built in its place.
The £407,000 from the Government's Land Release Fund (LRF) will also allow for preparatory work on the Ashcroft House site in Kingston Lane, Shoreham.
The LRF supports council-led projects to build strong communities and funding is often used for schemes which will significantly improve people's quality of life.
Ashcroft House has been empty since January 2020 and is set to be replaced with a housing scheme for the over 55s.
A design team has been appointed and a planning application is expected to be submitted in spring next year.
Councillor Carson Albury, Adur's Executive Member for Customer Services, said:
“I am delighted that we have been awarded this funding which will enable us to carry out the necessary work to get this project off the ground.
“We want to forge strong communities and build homes which will not only provide for our residents' needs but will also help them to feel settled and happy.”
Earlier this year Adur District Council's Joint Strategic Committee released £540,000 from the development programme contingency budget to move towards gaining planning permission for the redevelopment.
It also agreed the preferred redevelopment option, to demolish the main block to make way for more than 40 flats. All the flats will be wheelchair accessible and some will be designated wheelchair units. The new development will also include lifts and car parking.
Eight bungalows on the site would be refurbished and new kitchens and bathrooms installed as needed.
The total cost of the development will be around £11 million and the council anticipates securing £3.6 million of external funding to support the project.
