A revamp of public toilets in central Bognor Regis now has the go ahead after the Planning Committee discussd the proposals.
Arun District Council can now commence refurbishment of the Bedford Street public toilets after its Planning Committee approved the proposals on Wednesday (22 June).
Planning officers explained that the £250,000 refurbishment aims to combat anti-social behaviour in the building, including drug dealing.
The toilets will be made unisex and will have one entrance instead of the current two.
Concerns had been expressed over womens’ safety in the shared space but officers explained that each cubicle would have its own sink and dryer inside.
The refurbishment will also see the addition of a disabled toilet with baby changing facilities.
Ricky Bower, who acted as temporary chair, expressed some confusion over why the proposals had come before the Planning Committee as the building’s use will remain the same.
But planning officers explained that refurbishing the building requires permission – even though changes to the outside will be ‘modest’.
Committee members called the proposals a ‘big improvement’ and unanimously approved the planning application.
Colin Oliver-Redgate said: “Any improvement like this should provide great relief for everyone.”
