Penny Ibbott completes an epic tour around the whole of England this Saturday (16th October), having relied only on her wits and the use of her free bus pass to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
Penny (75 years young) said, “I’m doing this ‘Boomer on a Bus’ challenge for St Wilfrid’s because the loving care they provide for terminally ill patients is outstanding. I know, because my late husband Geoff was one of those patients.
When I received my concessionary bus pass I knew I wanted to break free and have an adventure. I’ve now visited over 50 major towns, met dozens of kind strangers and even fitted in a ferry crossing or two!”.
The St Wilfrid’s ambassador returns six weeks after first setting out from the Chidham shop where she volunteers, having visited the most easterly (Lowestoft), northern (Berwick-upon-Tweed), westerly (Land’s end) and southern points (Lizard point) in the country. At each of these points Penny placed a commemorative stone, each colourfully painted by volunteers of the Art class run by St Wilfrid’s Hospice.
Community Fundraising Manager Alex Burch said, “Penny has warmed the hearts of many with how far she has gone on the most modest of budgets and the kindness of friends and strangers alike.
Over the past 46 days Penny’s Boomer on a Bus challenge has raised over £1800, enough to provide over 50 hours of Community Nursing time for terminally ill patients to receive expert care in their own homes.
St Wilfrid’s Hospice is incredibly grateful to have supporters like Penny, prepared to take on exciting challenges to help St Wilfrid’s continue to offer its services completely free to the public every year”.
