The babies, called 'cria' marked the college's first 'unpacking' - the name for when Alpacas give birth

A Pulborough college is celebrating following the birth of its first ever baby Alpacas.

Brinsbury College has welcomed the arrival of three 'cria' after it's Alpacas went through 'unpacking' - the name for their birthing process. The college is now home to two baby girls named Maisie and Maria, and one boy, who's yet to be named.

The college's animal care instructor Vicki Warland describes it as a "very special time" for them:

"We have a lot of excited students and staff who are keen to see how they are getting on.

“Mollie in particular has been very protective of little Maisie, spitting at us when we’ve entered their fields to check on the cria.

"But we’re so pleased with their development – they are all thriving, and it’s wonderful to see.”

She adds that the mums are "taking great care" of the cria, which are "doing brilliantly."

Maria was a "surprise premature arrival", and kept "staff on their toes for the first few days", but is now "flourishing" beneath the care of mum, Mia.

Maisie was the second to come along - to a "very protective Mollie", staff quip, who's "taken to life as a mum well."

Baby number three, the boy, "kept everyone waiting" - being delivered by mum Mabel over a week later than expected.

The babies, which weigh between six and eight kilograms, are expected to grow up to 70 kilograms when they reach adulthood.
