Local brothers run side by side to raise money for charity

Ben and Chris Sherlock will run together this coming Sunday at the Great South Run to raise money for a charity that is very much "close to their hearts".

The boys who both grew up together in Bognor Regis are aiming to raise as much money as they can for the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) which supports servicemen and women, veterans and military families.

Chris Sherlock told V2 Radio that having served in the Royal Navy for 22 years he has always been a supporter of the charity and aware of the great work they do to support families and veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Chris said "We experienced that support ourselves first hand in 2010 when unfortunately my wife’s cousin (Marine Paul Warren) was tragically killed in Afghanistan, aged 23, it was his second tour. The charity was there to support Lisa’s family and continues to do so. My brother Ben is a social worker in West Sussex and often utilises the support network the RNRMC provides veterans. Being able to connect veterans to the charity is vital.

Running in support of this charity means a great deal to Ben and l. Reaching and hopefully exceeding the target will help ensure this amazing charity is there to support serving Royal Navy & Royal Marines men and women, their families and veterans"

Since 2007, the charity has funded projects and facilities that boost morale for those who serve today by distriburing millions of pounds annually to military charities which care for the children, families and veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. It also funds support for those with a range of issues including mental health, substance abuse, injury and homelessness.

The Great South Run is one of the biggest South coast running events famous for its buzzing atmosphere, iconic music and entertainment zones, and a route that takes runners past HMS Victory, Portsmouth’s historic dockyard and the glorious seafront finish. It’s a 10 mile (16.09 km) race and this year will take place on Sunday 17th October 2021 with thousands expected to run.
