Celts vs Romans week at Fishbourne Roman Palace

Celts and Romans will come together at Fishbourne Roman Palace this half term as the clash of cultures from 2,000-years-ago is celebrated.

Mead vs wine; roundhouse vs villa; nettle soup vs stuffed dormice – the differences in lifestyle and customs between the two distinct communities will be marked in style at the site near Chichester next week.

From Monday May 30 to Friday June 3, a range of family-friendly activities will be on offer to visitors allowing them to experience what life was like for Celts and Romans.

The activities are all included as part of general admission to the whole Roman Palace site – meaning visitors will also be explore the magnificent mosaics, stroll round the recreated gardens and discover some of the fascinating finds during their trip.

Sarah Parker, Property Manager at Fishbourne Roman Palace, said: “Many people still believe that the Roman ‘invasion’ of Britain brought an end to many of the common practices established by those already living on these isles.

“The establishment of Fishbourne Roman Palace nearly 2,000-years-ago contradicts that view, displaying how the exchange of goods and ideas were essential in the creation of the Roman Empire.

“Our week-long programme of activities aims to celebrate the different customs in an open, accessible and fun way which is perfect for visitors of all ages.”
