The fire service is urging people to take extra care when carrying out DIY projects.
Last year West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service attended more than 70 incidents related to DIY – including fires started by faulty electrical wiring, battery chargers, and welding.
Firefighters are urging people to consider their own safety before beginning a new DIY project to try and prevent further injuries.
To ensure your safety throughout the project, the service recommends reading all the instructions on the equipment you’re using, ensuring your tools have been purchased from reputable suppliers and clearing your working environment of any obstructions.
The warning comes after off-duty firefighter Simon Woodland sustained injuries after using a disc incorrectly labelled – which claimed to be compatible with household angle grinders.
Head of Prevention, Nicki Peddle, said: “If you’re thinking of taking on a DIY project, no matter how experienced you are, it’s vital that you implement the proper safety measures before getting started.
“There are many potential risks associated with DIY, and the consequences of dismissing safety precautions doesn’t bear thinking about.
“So please, protect yourself, your family and your workspace by staying safe.”
