Going green is in style for Chichester College salon

Chichester College’s hair salon has made an important change to help protect the environment.

Students and staff have made a sustainability pledge to offer a more environmentally friendly experience in the salon, by joining the Green Salon Collective. The collective’s mission is to prove the hairdressing industry can make responsible changes to protect the environment – and by joining the collective, the college has access to guidance and support to enable salon sustainability. It’s now possible for students and staff studying and working in the Lee Stafford Salon at Chichester College to recycle materials that would usually be classified as non-recyclable, reducing the amount of waste. This includes used foils, used colour tubes, salon towels and even hair! These items are recycled, composted or recovered – and even the profits made by the collective are donated to charities, including FoodCycle and Haircuts4Homeless. Julie Davis, Deputy Head of Learning for Service Industries (Hair & Beauty) at Chichester College, said: “We wanted to look at how we could create a more sustainable salon and lead the way for our students. “We researched the Green Salon Collective. It was inspirational to see how the waste from the salon can be used, turning it into something useful – including hair mats to mop up oil spills. “Service industries have implemented a sustainability charter and hopefully our part will become something larger as our students take what they learn forward  into their careers.” Helen Loftus, Chichester College Principal, added: “This is just another way that college, as part of Chichester College Group, is working towards creating a more sustainable future. “It’s our responsibility to work with young people to do whatever we can to create a better environment for future generations. “Our staff, across all departments, have been working to implement a number of projects designed to help us becoming a more sustainable group – and I’m delighted to see the salon taking on the challenge.” Find out more about the Green Salon Collective: www.greensaloncollective.com
