Arun District Council has refreshed its fuel poverty and energy efficiency strategy and is asking residents for their views.
The five-year plan aims to support households struggling with rising energy costs and to help improve home efficiency.
The council says the national energy crisis has hit the lowest-income families hardest. Feedback from the consultation will be presented to councillors in the new year before the plan is finalised.
The plan for the next five years includes:
- Working to reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty, such as spending 10% or more of their income on maintaining a comfortable temperature at home
- Targeting local areas of housing with Hard to Treat (HTT) homes with extra support, creative solutions
- Improving the energy efficiency of the council’s own housing stock
- Contributing to national net zero targets, for example, supporting residents and landlords to upgrade to modern, renewable energy systems
- Finding and helping the owners of cold homes to improve energy efficiency by installing loft, cavity wall and solid wall insulation
- Enforcing minimum energy efficiency standards for the private rented sector
Councillor Amanda Worne, Chair of Arun District Council’s Environment Committee, said:
“Tackling fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency is a priority for Arun District Council. This strategy is about supporting our most vulnerable residents, including people with disabilities who often need their homes heated 24/7 and at higher temperatures to stay warm in the colder weather, reducing energy costs, and helping our community move towards a sustainable, net zero future. Your feedback is vital in shaping this plan, so please have your say in this consultation.” The consultation runs until 19 December 2025 and can be completed here: Energy efficiency and fuel poverty strategy 2026 - 2031 – Fill in form
