Hundreds of volunteers are being recognised for the difference they make across West Sussex County Council services.
The recognition comes as part of Volunteers’ Week, which celebrates people who give their time to support communities and local services.
Across West Sussex, volunteers play a wide-ranging role, from supporting young carers and helping children through the justice system, to encouraging reading in libraries and serving as school governors.
The county council says volunteers contribute thousands of hours every year, helping services reach more people and provide more personalised support.
In libraries alone, volunteers give almost 20,000 hours annually, supporting digital skills sessions, reading groups and home library services.
Over the past year, Appropriate Adult volunteers have attended police custody hundreds of times, helping ensure children and young people have someone to support them when a parent or carer is not available.
Other volunteers help preserve the county’s history, provide companionship to residents who may otherwise feel isolated, and share skills and experience in schools and colleges.
Some also support recycling work by helping residents understand what can and cannot be recycled.
A spokesperson for the county council said: “Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting our communities and enhancing the services we provide. Whether they are helping a young person in a moment of need, supporting someone to discover the joy of reading, or sharing their skills to inspire future generations, their contribution is invaluable. We are incredibly grateful for the time, care and commitment they give, and Volunteers’ Week is a chance to recognise and celebrate the difference they make every day.”
The council says opportunities are flexible, from giving an hour to support schools and colleges to regular roles such as school governor, independent visitor, waste prevention advisor or library volunteer.
