Search For Missing Man Off West Wittering Stood Down After 24 Hours

4 Life boat crews, the coastguard helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft were all involved in that search .

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said:

"HM Coastguard has this afternoon (Tuesday 5th Sept)  stood down the search for a man reported to be in difficulty in the water at West Wittering last night. An extensive operation was carried out through the night, this morning and into the early afternoon, after the alarm was raised at around 8pm on Monday 4 September.

The search involved Coastguard Rescue Teams from Hayling, Hill Head, Portsmouth, Selsey, Lymington and Littlehampton, alongside HM Coastguard helicopters from Lee-on-the-Solent and Lydd, two HM Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats from Bembridge, Selsey, Hayling and Portsmouth and the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service lifeboat. Assistance has also been provided by passing vessels, Sussex Police and harbour authorities.”

The team would like to thank West Wittering Beach Estate for all their help and assistance throughout the search as well as providing search teams' food and refreshments.

A spokesperson for West Wittering Estate said: 
"We have been working tirelessly with local HM Coastguard Rescue Teams, HM Coastguard helicopters and RNLI lifeboats, as well as passing vessels, in search for a man reported to be in difficulty in the water last night. The extensive operation has since stood down and our thoughts are with the gentleman's family during this difficult time."
