Organisations are being invited to put forward ideas for a site at Brooklands Park as part of plans to further improve one of Worthing’s most popular green spaces.
Worthing Borough Council has opened an expressions of interest process for land in the south-west of the park, seeking deliverable projects that could support nature, leisure and wellbeing.
The size of the site being offered has been reduced following feedback from the community. The council said it hoped the opportunity would attract imaginative, non-residential proposals that could add to the park’s appeal for residents and visitors.
Brooklands Park has undergone a major transformation in recent years through a multimillion-pound investment programme. Improvements have focused on restoring the landscape, increasing accessibility and enhancing biodiversity.
The work has also included the opening of Brooklands Café, which overlooks the restored lake and has become a popular community venue.
Proposals will be assessed on their potential long-term benefits, environmental impact and how well they fit with the park’s character and surroundings.
The council stressed that launching the expressions of interest process did not mean it was committed to progressing with any particular scheme.
Councillor Caroline Baxter, the leader of Worthing Borough Council, said:
“Brooklands Park is one of Worthing's most loved green spaces, and I'm excited to see what ideas organisations bring forward to make it even better for residents and visitors.
“We've listened to the community and reduced the size of the site we're making available. This is a chance to explore new ideas that could enhance the park while respecting everything people already love about it.
“This is about seeing what's possible. No decisions have been made and any future decisions will depend on the quality of the proposals we receive.”
The opportunity follows discussions with local businesses, organisations and other stakeholders, who encouraged the council to make suitable sites available for external investment and fresh ideas.
Expressions of interest are also due to be invited for the West Buildings Shelter site on Worthing seafront later this month.
The first stage of the Brooklands Park process is open until 5pm on Sunday, August 16.
Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to develop their plans in more detail during a second stage.
A preferred proposal could be selected later this year, although any final development would still need to secure full planning permission.
