The RSPCA has reported a sharp rise in pet abandonment in West Sussex, linked to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
During the winter months, cases increased by nearly a third, reflecting the growing challenges faced by pet owners.
Last year, the Horsham-based charity handled 201 cases in West Sussex, a 30% rise compared to 2021.
In East Sussex, 213 cases of pet abandonment were recorded, marking an 8% increase over the past three years.
The RSPCA highlights the urgent need for support, as the financial strain on families continues to impact animal welfare. These figures underline a troubling trend and emphasize the importance of providing assistance to both struggling pet owners and the animals at risk of being abandoned.
