Police in Fratton were called by colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service shortly after 7:45pm on Tuesday 3 March after a 43-year-old man had been assaulted on Somers Road North at around 6:25pm.
He was subsequently taken to Southampton General Hospital to be treated for a head injury, and remains in a serious, but stable, condition.
Two men, aged 34 and 54, have both been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The 54-year-old man has been bailed until 3 June pending further enquiries. The 34-year-old man has been released without charge and will face no further action.
Police say initial enquiries suggest a number of potential witnesses were in the area at the time.
