Tributes have been paid to Malcolm Wauchope, known affectionately as “Choppy”, who has died after a battle with cancer.
Malcolm passed away on Saturday surrounded by his family. He served as a police sergeant in Brighton for around 30 years and was widely known and respected across the city and beyond for his dedication to policing and his warm personality.
During his long career, Malcolm became a familiar and reassuring presence, earning the respect of colleagues and the people he served. Those who worked alongside him have described him as a much-loved character, full of joy, humour and kindness, who brought positivity to the workplace.
After retiring from Sussex Police last year, Malcolm chose to return to the organisation as a member of police staff, continuing to support colleagues and contribute his experience and commitment. His decision to return was seen as a reflection of his strong sense of service and his enduring connection to the force.
The Sussex Police Federation has paid tribute to Malcolm, saying its thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who knew and worked with him at this difficult time. Colleagues have also shared memories of his loyalty, professionalism and the genuine care he showed for others.
Malcolm’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across policing in Sussex, with many highlighting the lasting impact he made over three decades of service. He is remembered not only for his career, but for the warmth, joy and friendship he brought to those around him.
