Fire crews in West Sussex are warning of the growing risks linked to e-cigarettes, as concerns increase over fires caused by faulty devices and chargers.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says electronic cigarettes, which use lithium-ion batteries to heat liquid into vapour, can pose a serious fire risk if not used correctly. The service says fires can occur due to overcharging, physical damage to batteries, or manufacturing defects. There are also concerns about unbranded or low-quality chargers, many of which do not meet UK safety standards. Among the risks identified are overheating chargers, poorly fitted plugs, lack of safety instructions, and wiring faults which could lead to electric shock or fire. Firefighters are urging residents to take simple precautions to reduce the risk. People are advised to only buy e-cigarettes and accessories from reputable retailers, and to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. They also stress the importance of using the correct charger supplied with the device, and never leaving e-cigarettes unattended while charging. Devices should be kept away from soft furnishings or other flammable materials during charging. Once fully charged, users are advised to unplug the device and remove the battery where possible. Crews also warn against mixing components from different manufacturers, as this can increase the risk of malfunction. Extra care should be taken when connecting batteries, ensuring they are not over-tightened and are fitted correctly.
