CV Tips

A CV is more than just a list of your accomplishments. A CV explains to a potential employer why they should care about you. Consider it from their point of view, and include material that will help them regard you as a valuable employee.

-

Personal Information and Contact Information - Check to see if your personal contact information is clear, accurate, and comprehensive. If at all feasible, use a professional-sounding e-mail address. Your date of birth, gender, or marital status are not required.

Statement of Purpose - Include a paragraph at the beginning of your resume that briefly describes who you are, what you can do, and why an employer should continue reading. Consider what they would enjoy reading (rather than what they might not).

Make sure your CV is neat, has consistent layout, isn't too crowded, isn't more than two pages lengthy, and is free of grammatical and spelling errors.

Work Experience - List your employment experience in chronological order, beginning with the most recent and moving backwards. Begin by listing the company's name, your job title, and the dates you worked there. Then describe what you did, your accomplishments, any special tasks you performed, and the skills you utilised and developed. Give as much detail as possible on the most current and/or relevant experience. Consider what a potential employer could be looking for.

Qualifications and education - Outline your educational background and applicable credentials, including dates and awarding bodies/educational institutions.

Adapt to the needs of each job - For each job you apply for, customise your CV and cover letter. Consider the requirements of the employer.
Select a few key terms from the job advertisement to add in your personal statement or cover letter.
Demonstrate that you meet the job's requirements.

Do NOT lie on your C.V - You could be tempted to exaggerate your experience or even lie about your qualifications, job dates, and so forth. Never do this; if the new employer finds out after you receive the job, you could be dismissed.
