Like many of the best things in life this festival started with a chance conversation in a pub – The Blue Bell in Emsworth.

‘How do you fancy running a Beer Festival?’ was the question. The answer from WemsFest Artistic Director Mark Ringwood was ‘Why not? I’ve started and run 2 beer festivals before and with the right venue I’m sure it’s an idea which would be enthusiastically met.’
That was in 2016 and, with the exception of Covid-affected 2020, there’s been one held over 3 days every September since in Emsworth Community Centre – so this year’s is the tenth! Nearly 300 different ales from as far afield as Orkney, and Cornwall have rubbed shoulders
with a wide range of wines and ciders, silent film, pop-up shanty-men, traditional pub tunes on the piano, and a wide range of food both hot and cold.
Funds raised from the festival have gone to support community initiatives like Emsworth in Bloom, Bookerynook, the now annual January Blues Festival, and music workshops in local schools. Mark says that what makes the festival so attractive to punters is the convivial
atmosphere which includes a general bar area, a quiet area where games can be played and silent films enjoyed, and two lovely outdoor courtyard areas. Tickets have been pegged at the same price of £12.50 for the past 8 festivals and include a special souvenir beer or
wine glass, a free drink and programme. Generous sponsorship from local businesses and individuals covers the cost of the glasses and enthusiastic but measured consumption covers the rest.
This year’s festival has a slightly changed format with the Friday session running from an earlier start time of 2pm until 10.30pm, and Saturday is now one long session from 11am to 10.30pm. Sunday’s session is always called ‘Drinkups’ when any remaining ales and ciders
are substantially discounted between 12noon and 4pm. Low-alcohol beers, vegan-friendly and gluten free ales are also available.
