Plans to turn a former betting shop in Bognor Regis into a 24-hour adult gaming centre have been refused, despite a separate approval for signage at the property.
Arun District Council refused the change of use application for 58 High Street on October 6.
Officers concluded that there was insufficient evidence that the proposed operation would not cause significant disturbance to nearby residents during early hours.
The decision follows the conditional approval of a separate application for four internally illuminated signs and one projecting sign at the property. An application concerning alterations to the shopfront, including new entrance doors, was also recommended for approval.
The applications were assessed separately with officers finding that the changes to the shopfront would not harm the appearance of the street but they raised concerns about noise from the proposed gaming centre.
The former William Hill shop was planned for conversion by Merkur Slots, with the applicant arguing that the scheme would bring a vacant unit back into use and create 12 full time jobs.
Merkur Slots says it would offer bingo games and “slot gaming” products “designed to provide a modern casino feel”.
However, officers concluded that the benefits of the scheme did not outweigh concerns about the potential impact on flats directly above and other nearby homes.
The refusal was made based on the proposed opening hours and the possibility of noise from customers arriving, leaving or gathering outside during early hours.
The applicant can appeal against the refusal or submit a fresh planning application addressing the council’s concerns.
