Plans to use Chichester’s old Post Office building as extra rooms for a Travelodge hotel have been submitted to the district council.
Travelodge occupies the upper floors of the building on the corner of West Street and Chapel Street, while the old Post Office and the Belle Isle restaurant used to run from the ground floor.
With the former moving out in 2016 and the latter closing in 2019, the hotel now wants to take over the whole site to add an extra 26 rooms, taking its capacity from 76 rooms to 102.
A statement submitted with the application said: “The proposed scheme secures a viable long-term use for a prominent locally listed building while preserving its contribution to the character and appearance of the Chichester Conservation Area.
“Enhancement works to the principal West Street elevation will improve the appearance of the building and reinforce the character of the locally listed asset. Original ground-floor windows will be uncovered and repaired, reinstating an important historic feature of the façade.”
