Beachgoers in the South given safety advice from RNLI

If you're planning a trip to one of the South’s many beaches in the heatwave, the RNLI is reminding visitors about its “Float to Live” campaign.

The lifesaving advice has already helped over 50 people in a variety of situations across the UK — from children caught in rip currents and runners falling into canals, to individuals swept out by waves and fishermen going overboard.

The RNLI say you should follow these steps if you end up in the water:

  • The best way to float is to tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
  • Try to relax and breathe normally.
  • Gently move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat if you need to.
  • Spread your arms and legs out to improve stability – and it's OK if your legs sink, we all float differently.
  • Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

Practice floating in a supervised location like a swimming pool.
