A Chichester City footballer is in an induced coma after suffering a serious head injury during a weekend match.

The club confirmed that 21-year-old striker Billy Vigar, from Worthing, sustained what it described as “a significant brain injury” in Saturday’s fixture against Wingate and Finchley.

Vigar, who began his career in the Arsenal academy, has also played for Hastings United and Eastbourne Borough. He joined Chichester City earlier this year and has been a regular in the squad.

In a statement released on Facebook, the club said: “Billy received a significant brain injury and is currently in an induced coma in intensive care receiving the best possible treatment. It is too early to say what the outcome will be and even if things go well, there will be a long road to recovery ahead.

"Love from the whole of the CCFC family Billy.”

The news has prompted an outpouring of support from fans, teammates and members of the non-league football community. Dozens of messages wishing Vigar a full recovery have been shared on social media since the announcement.

On Facebook Bognor Regis Town FC said "Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy."

Vigar came through Arsenal’s youth set-up and made appearances for the club at under-18 and under-23 level. He later went on loan to Derby County’s academy before spells in Sussex football with Hastings and Eastbourne Borough.

Chichester City’s next league fixture is due to take place this weekend. It is not yet clear whether the match will be affected.
