Farmers in Chichester take part in day of unity

Members of the National Farmers Union are hosting a day of unity event in Chichester to voice opposition to recent government revisions to inheritance tax.

The districts farmers will assemble at Tesco Extra car park with a tractor and express thanks to the community for its support of British agriculture.

The government says that these tax changes are crucial, describing them as fair and affecting about 500 claims annually.

The unintended consequences of the Autumn Budget have made farmers realise how much support they have from the public.

Rupert Hoare from Adsdean Farm, near Chichester says “Our Farming Day of Unity will see farmers and growers coming out of the countryside into towns and cities to engage with the public and thank them for their support."

British farmers have faced a variety of challenges beyond the specific issue of inheritance tax that have contributed to widespread dissatisfaction within the sector. These include struggling with new trade barriers since Brexit, a shortage of labor, climate change regulations, foot-and-mouth disease, bird flu, and bovine tuberculosis, which can lead to massive disruptions, culls, and financial losses, along with stringent movement controls.
