Eight fire engines are tackling a fire at a waste transfer site in Ford Road, Ford.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called shortly after 10am and has also sent a water carrier.
People are being asked to avoid the area, while nearby residents should keep their doors and windows closed.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 10.03am to reports of a fire at a waste transfer site in Ford Road, Ford.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised eight fire engines and a water carrier to the scene.
“Upon arrival crews found a large amount of waste alight inside an industrial building.
“Crews have liaised with the site owners and the Environment Agency and are carrying out a controlled burn inside the building.
“The smoke plume has decreased significantly, and the incident has been scaled down. Our resources will remain at the scene for the next 24 hours.
“People are being advised to continue avoiding the area and to keep doors and windows closed if they live nearby.”
