A woman from Goring-by-Sea who falsely claimed she was too ill to leave her home has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Lewes Crown Court heard that 33-year-old Catherine Wieland fraudulently claimed more than £23,000 in benefits, telling authorities she was unable to go outside due to her condition.
However, an investigation later revealed she had been travelling abroad and taking part in physically demanding activities, including surfing and ziplining during a trip to Mexico.
The court was told the claims were made over a period of more than two years, during which Wieland received Personal Independence Payments intended to support those with serious health conditions.
Evidence presented showed a clear contrast between her reported limitations and her actual lifestyle, prompting action from investigators.
Wieland admitted the offence and was handed a suspended jail sentence, meaning she will avoid immediate custody provided she does not commit further offences within a set period.
She has also been ordered to repay the full amount she fraudulently obtained.
The case has been highlighted by authorities as an example of the consequences of benefit fraud, which diverts support away from those who genuinely need it.
