Parliament has discussed proposals to modernise operations at Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport Limited, the owners, aim to decrease flight times and reduce carbon emissions.

Horsham's Liberal Democrat MP, John Milne, has expressed concerns about the potential impact of changing flight paths on nearby residents despite the plan's potential to generate millions for the airport.

Gatwick Airport has been in use since the 1930s, initially used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. It was officially opened as a civilian airport in 1958 by Queen Elizabeth II.

It has two main terminals, the North Terminal and the South Terminal, which together handle over 46 million passengers a year.

Gatwick operates a single runway, but it is unique because it has a standby runway that is used when the main runway is not available.

The airport serves as a base for several major airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, and Virgin Atlantic. It offers flights to more than 200 destinations in 90 countries.

Gatwick is a major economic driver for the region, providing thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to the local economy.

The airport has implemented several environmental strategies, aiming to reduce carbon emissions, manage noise impact, and promote sustainable practices across its operations.
