Parents across the South East are being encouraged to join a free online session later this month that will focus on how to keep children safe when using the internet.
The webinar, organised by the regional Police Cyber Crime Unit, aims to give families practical advice on how to protect young people from the growing number of threats they face online. Officers say the event is part of ongoing work to support parents and carers in understanding the fast-changing digital landscape.
The session, called “The Digital Dilemma: Keeping Children Safe Online,” will take place on Sunday 5 October at 10.30am. It will cover a wide range of issues that many parents may already have encountered at home.
Among the key topics will be spotting online threats, including the tactics cybercriminals use to target children and teenagers. The unit will also explore social media safety, with advice on handling risks linked to sextortion, disinformation, influencers, artificial intelligence, privacy concerns and hacked accounts.
There will also be guidance on parental controls, including the debate around children’s access to technology and social media, and practical steps to minimise harm from device usage.
The risks of online gaming will be another focus, with tips on how to monitor activity and reduce exposure to inappropriate content or unwanted contact. Parents will also hear essential advice on basic cybersecurity, from setting strong passwords to using two-factor authentication and securing family accounts.
Importantly, the session will end with an interactive question and answer session, giving parents the chance to raise specific concerns and receive advice directly from experts in the field.
The Police Cyber Crime Unit says the webinar is designed to give families confidence in tackling issues that may feel overwhelming, particularly as online platforms continue to evolve rapidly. They hope the event will not only provide reassurance, but also practical tools parents can use immediately at home.
The webinar is free to attend, though registration is required.
