UPDATE: Strikes at Gatwick during Easter Bank Holiday

There could be major disruptions to people’s travel plans heading out of Gatwick during the Easter Bank Holiday.

This update includes a statement from Red Handling.

Over a hundred members of the Unite Union, including baggage handlers and flight dispatchers, are to strike.

The union says members working for Red Handling will walk out in a dispute over pensions.

We understand check-in staff and flight dispatchers for the airlines Norwegian, Delta, TAP and Air Peace will also go on strike.

These workers handle about 50 flights a day, so the strike action could cause major disruption for holiday makers planning getaways that weekend with expected flight delays, cancellations, long queues at check-in and baggage delays.

Strike action will start on Good Friday, 18 April and continue each day over the Easter weekend until the early hours of Tuesday 22 April.

Unite regional officer David Taylor said: "The way the workers have been treated by Red Handling has been nothing short of a disgrace.

"We’re demanding that Red Handling pay all outstanding pension contributions immediately and compensate staff for retirement money they've lost, as well as commit to reimbursing them for late payments.

"There is also a health and safety issue due to Red Handling workers not being able to take adequate breaks so they can rest between shifts and we urge the company to take this seriously."
