Motorists across the South are being advised to ensure their vehicles are fit for travel before embarking on their Christmas journeys.
It's estimated that around thirty million trips will be made across the country during the festive season, including three million today.
To reduce traffic congestion, most roadworks, except for emergency repairs, will be paused during the Christmas period.
Here's what to do to ensure a smooth and safe journey:
Vehicle Maintenance: Before setting off, ensure your vehicle is in good working order. Check your tyres for adequate tread and proper inflation, test your lights and brakes, and make sure your battery is fully charged. It's also wise to top up your windscreen washer fluid and antifreeze to cope with winter conditions.
Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with your route before you depart. Consider using a GPS or a route planning app to help navigate and to stay informed about traffic conditions and road closures in real-time. Have a backup route in mind in case you encounter unexpected delays or closures.
Leave Early or Late: To avoid the worst of the traffic, consider setting off early in the morning or later in the evening. Roads can be particularly congested in the mid-morning and late afternoon during the festive season.
Pack Essentials: Bring along winter essentials such as de-icer, a snow brush, blankets, water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. It’s also wise to have a fully charged mobile phone and a portable charger, just in case.
Weather Awareness: Keep an eye on the weather forecast for your route and destination. Winter weather can be unpredictable, and conditions can deteriorate quickly. Be prepared for icy roads or heavy snowfall, which could significantly impact your travel plans.
Stay Rested: Ensure you are well-rested before driving — tiredness can severely impact your reaction times and decision-making abilities. Plan for regular breaks during your journey to stretch, refresh, and if necessary, switch drivers.
Be Patient: The roads are likely to be busier during the holiday season. Maintain a calm demeanor, give other road users space, and don’t rush. Remember, it’s better to arrive late and safe than not at all.
Emergency Numbers: Keep a list of emergency numbers, including roadside assistance, in your vehicle. Ensure your car insurance and breakdown cover are up-to-date and cover your needs for the journey.
By taking these precautions, you can help make your Christmas travel as safe and stress-free as possible.
