Worthing’s seafront big wheel is set to remain closed for the next few days, while operators wait for spare parts to be delivered.
The attraction was shut down following an incident on Sunday, when a rider became stuck high above the ground. Firefighters were called to the scene and carried out a rescue operation to safely bring the person down. No injuries were reported, but the event caused concern for both visitors and the council.
Worthing Borough Council confirmed it is working closely with the wheel’s operators to make sure the issue does not happen again.
According to the operator’s website, Worthing’s big wheel is one of the largest transportable Ferris wheels in the country.
Standing at 144 feet tall, it features 27 open-air gondolas and offers visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of the town, the South Downs, and the Sussex coastline. On clear days, riders can even see as far as Brighton and beyond.
The wheel has become a popular feature on Worthing’s seafront since its installation, drawing tourists and residents alike. Many say it has helped boost the town’s profile as a visitor destination, especially during the busy summer months.
While the closure is expected to be temporary, spare parts are being sourced to carry out repairs as quickly as possible. Once fitted, the attraction will undergo further checks before being cleared to reopen.
For now, the big wheel remains a striking but silent landmark on Worthing’s promenade, with residents and visitors waiting to see it turn again safely in the coming days.
