A yellow weather warning for strong winds remains in place across the South today.

The Met Office says the alert runs until six o’clock this evening.

Gusts could reach 70 miles an hour on exposed coasts and hills, with lower speeds inland.

How to Stay Safe in High Winds: Advice for Households, Drivers and Coastal Communities

With strong winds and stormy conditions expected, here's some ways you can help keep safe:

Protecting your property
Loose items left outside can easily become dangerous in high winds. Residents are being advised to secure or bring indoors anything that could blow away. That includes bins, plant pots, and garden furniture. Trampolines should be flipped over or pegged down, while sheds need to be locked to prevent doors from swinging open.

Before you travel
Severe weather often leads to delays and treacherous driving conditions. Before setting off, check your route for road closures and listen for live travel updates. Motorists should carry warm clothing, food, a blanket, water and a torch in case of delays. A fully charged mobile phone — along with a car charger or battery pack — is also recommended.

Driving in strong winds
If travel is unavoidable, drivers are urged to take extra care. Slow down to reduce the effect of sudden gusts and keep a firm grip on the steering wheel. Be cautious around high-sided vehicles and give extra space to cyclists, motorcyclists, buses and lorries. Overtaking in windy conditions should be avoided where possible.

Staying safe at the coast
Those living or working near the sea are reminded to check forecasts and tide times before heading out. Large waves can pose serious risks even from the shoreline, while cliff paths may be unstable. Walkers should know their route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

When out and about
Strong winds increase the risk of injury from falling debris. People are advised to stay indoors where possible, and if outside, avoid sheltering near buildings and trees.

Weather warnings can change quickly, so staying up to date with the latest forecasts is essential.
