Fareham’s ancient woodland park is set for a £2.62 million transformation, promising easier access and modern facilities.
Plans include a new accessible path network, modernised toilets, a new arrival hub, and work on the lakes and drainage systems to reduce flooding and silt build-up.
The Fareham Borough Council-backed project follows a public consultation that heard from 840 residents, who praised the park as a “hidden gem” but highlighted problems getting around, particularly for older visitors and people with disabilities.
Under the plans, the accessible path network will feature a 1.5-metre-wide elevated boardwalk over wet areas, while steep or narrow sections of existing trails will be rerouted or closed, making it easier for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility to explore the park safely.
The modernised toilets will upgrade outdated facilities, while the new arrival hub near the main lake will include interpretation panels, a viewing platform, and space for educational and community activities.
Restoration work on the lakes and drainage systems will help prevent flooding and silt build-up.
The council has agreed in principle to allocate up to £297,532.96 from New Forest Mitigation funds and Section 106 contributions, to be used if National Lottery funding does not cover the full cost of the project.
At the council’s executive meeting on February 19, Cllr Joanne Burton, whose ward includes Holly Hill, praised the consultation as “phenomenal.”
She added: “It’ll be really good to see this scheme delivered and certainly recognising what people have asked for, particularly the accessibility.
“Elderly residents all appreciate Holly Hill but struggle with the difficulty in accessing parts of it.
“I’m pleased that we have been successful with the National Lottery heritage.”
Cllr Connie Hockley added: “As one of the older people, I can’t get around Holly Hill anymore like I used to, so I welcome the fact that there’s going to be some kind of pathway that older people can use.
“People are so enthusiastic about this and I hope it gets the money it needs.”
