Network Rail says it understands the closure of the railway line between Surrey and West Sussex will be frustrating for passengers, but insists it has been left with no alternative.
The line between Horsham and Dorking has been shut after what Network Rail describes as a “substantial” landslip, which has caused part of the track to shift. Engineers say the movement has made the route unsafe for trains, forcing an immediate closure while repairs are carried out.
As a result, no train services are running between Horsham and Dorking until at least Friday. Stations at Warnham, Ockley and Holmwood are not being served by any trains during the closure, leaving passengers reliant on replacement transport.
Network Rail says specialist teams are now working on site to assess the damage and stabilise the affected area. The company says safety is its top priority and that trains cannot return until engineers are satisfied the track and surrounding ground are secure.
A rail replacement bus service is operating once an hour between Horsham and Dorking. However, passengers are being warned that journeys are likely to take at least 30 minutes longer than usual, particularly during busy periods.
Network Rail has apologised for the disruption and urged passengers to check before they travel. People are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider alternative routes where possible.
The company says recent wet weather has increased the risk of landslips across the rail network, particularly on routes that run through cuttings or embankments. Regular inspections are carried out, but some incidents require urgent closures when conditions suddenly deteriorate.
