Billingshurst train track reopened after major incident

A railway line in Billingshurst blocked after a train struck part of a level crossing has reopened.

43 passengers were moved safely yesterday morning after the train they were on lost power after hitting debris on the track near Billingshurst.

Network Rail said that a cable to the electric third rail was damaged when the train hit the level crossing barrier, which was pushed onto the track after a vehicle hit it.

Southern had to close the track for repairs and clean-up operations, causing significant disruption to the commuter service.
